ANS Event on "Awareness and Discussion on Mental Health"

The America Nepal Society (ANS) organized an event on "Mental Health Awareness" on Saturday February 10, 2017 at a public library in Falls Church VA to promote awareness among the community members.

Paula King, intake officer with Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, talked about how to protect kids against substance abuse and advised the audience on different ways to monitor them, among other things.

Dr Shyam Karki, who's an Associate Clinical Professor, talked about 'Suicide Prevention', provided various facts on suicide and myths and facts surrounding the suicide. He also talked about different factors that leads to suicide, and the different clues to recognize them to prevent unwarranted situations.

Dr Devika Fiorillo, a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in psychotherapy for anxity, depression and trauma related disorders, talked about various factors that contribute to mental health illness and how it can affect interpersonal relationships with family, friends and coworkers.

Dr Madan Uprety talked about how the mental illness is handled in the Nepalse community, and why its important to see psychiatrist annually, among other things.

Saroj Uprety, a Mental Health Therapist in Prince William County, Community Services Board who works with Seriously Mental Illness (SMI) and Substance Abuse population talked about the different community resources required for successful recovery process.

This program was moderated by Indu Pokharel and ably assisted by other young volunteers of ANS - Manisha Prasai, Prakriti Deuja, Bibechana Niroula, Sandhya Adhikari, Trisha Dahal, Aarya Ghimire and Manisha Prasai.

ANS President Prabha Deuja thanked everyone for their attendance and everyone who were instrumental in making this event a successful one.


America Nepal Society Hosts ‘Meet & Greet’ with the Community

The current executive committee of the America Nepal Society (ANS) organized an event – “ANS Meet & Greet with Life Members and Past Executives” to meet with its new life members and past executives on Saturday November 18, 2017.

Nepal’s Ambassador to the U.S Dr Arjun Karki was the chief guest on the occasion. Several ANS past President’s like Suresh Baral, Rajendra Oli, Prem Sangraula and Bishnu Thapa shared their thoughts on what ANS was earlier and how it should move ahead in the future. Life members like Prabodh Shrestha and Manju Sangraula talked about their experience with ANS in the past and expressed their continued support to the organization.

ANS president Prabha B. Deuja talked about her experience with ANS, the recent election and the transition of ANS assets to the new executive committee. She shared the challenges the new committee had to work on, the progress ANS made so far, and ANS’s future activities. ANS Vice President Dr. Bishnu Ghimire gave the welcome speech and General Secretary Sudip Pokhrel lead the event. America Nepal Society Committee confirmed to be in attendance include: ANS Secretary Mrs.Anjana Budathoki, ANS Treasurer Mrs.Subha Shakya, Media Co-Ordinator Nilu Uprety, Members at large Ambika Adhikari, Member at large Sujit Aryal. Young artist and photographer Trisha Dahal’s pictures were also displayed during the event. Volunteer kids (Trisha Pokharel, Prakriti Deuja, Suvani Arjel, and bibi Niraula) assisted in attendance.

President Deuja expressed her appreciation for, and Sagarmatha TV for the continuous support. She also expressed her gratitude to Masala Indian Cuisine, Suresh Sapkota and Mandir Mainali for the light snacks that were served to the participants.
